PYROLYSIS CHARACTERISTICS OF COAL, BIOMASS AND RDF BLENDS IN THERMOGRAVIMETRIC ANALYZER

IntroductionSolid fuels, such as coal, biomass and RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel) can produce gaseous fuel or chemicals by the thermal conversion process. Although coal has a higher energy contents than biomass, utilization of coal can cause serious environmental pollution. On the other hand, biomass is environmentally friendly when utilized for energy production. Co-utilization of coal with other fuels such as biomass and RDF for energy production has been studied 1, It is known that co-utilization of coal and biomass can reduce air pollutants such as NOX, Sox and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) 2, Also, ash from biomass can act as a catalyst for coal gasification reaction 3. Also, RDF usually made of waste and plastic is expected to show some interaction with coal at high temperature. Synergistic or additive behaviors between coal and biomass/RDF are reported. However, it is somewhat controversial because it depends on the reactor type, heating rate and reaction time. In previous studies of pyrolysis kinetics of biomass, the one-step global reaction model and the two step consecutive model were used to interpret their kinetic data 4, 5. In this study, the pyrolysis characteristics of the coal/biomass/RDF blends with variation of blends ratio were determined and the synergistic effects between coal and biomass/RDF were determined.
