CROSS-LINKING REACTIONS OF OXYGEN GROUPS DURING LIQUEFACTION OF LIGNITE BY A NEW MODEL SYSTEM

IntroductionChina has abundant coal resources, but low-to-medium rank coals account for 55% of the total retained reserves. These low-to-medium rank coals have high moisture and oxygen content, a low energy density, be prone to weather and spontaneous combustion, and are also expensive in transportation. All these characteristics limit its high efficient utilization, but low rank coals usually have a relative larger porosity and high reactivity, so liquefaction can be realized under mild condition and the whole running cost can be reduced when these coals are used. Simultaneously, the domestic petroleum supply/demand gap and requirements for keeping the safety and stability of energy supply promote the development of coal liquefaction. So liquefaction is a very important low-to-medium rank coals utilization technology in China. But retrogressive reactions usually occur during liquefaction of these coals and many researches have shown that oxygen functional groups in the low-to-medium rank coals are major reactants in these retrogressive reactions.
