TG-FTIR INVESTIGATION ON BITUMINOUS COAL COMBUSTION IN O2/CO2 ATMOSPHERE

Introduction:O2/CO2 coal combustion technology is one of the most promising technologies for cogeneration of electricity and high concentrated CO2, which can be either used for enhanced oil recovery or sequestered. Several studies have been done on the combustion characteristics and gas emission characteristics such as SO2, NO* and CO from coal combustion in O2/CO2 mixture. Kiga. T1 has found that the flame propagation speed in O2/CO2 mixture is lower than that in air in a microgravity facility, which is attributed to the high heat capacity of CO2 compared to that of N2. Varheyi G2 measured the reaction rate of the coal char in O2/CO2 mixtures with varying O2 concentrations and argued that there was negligible effect of CO2 on the char reaction rate due to the much lower reaction rate of the char-CO2 reaction than that of char-O2. Croiset and Thambimuthu observed that the conversion of sulfur in coal to SO2 decreased during O2/CO2 combustion compared to air combustion because high SO3 concentrations in the flue gas during oxy-fuel combustion can result in sulfur retention by ash or deposits in the furnace.
