A PRELIMINARY STUDY ON MERCURY REMOVAL OVER A V2O5/AC CATALYST

IntroductionThe emission of mercury from the coal combustion has become a great environmental health concern 1, 2. It is estimated thai the annual emission of mercury from anthropogenic sources is over 2000 tons in the world, and the coal-fired power plants are considered to be the primary anthropogenic sources, accounting for about one-third of the entire emission 3. Generally there are three main forms of mercury in the coal combustion flue gas: elemental mercury (Hg0), oxidized mercury (Hg2+) and particle-bound mercury (Hgp). Most of the mercury companied with the particulates can be removed along with fly ash by a device such as electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) and/or baghouses. Wet scrubbers are effective to remove the oxidized mercury in vapor phase. However, the removal of the elemental mercury is difficult due to its higher volatility, chemical inertness and insolubility in water 4.
