CATALYTIC UPGRADING OF BIOMASS FAST PYROLYSIS VAPORS IN A FLUID1ZED BED WITH FRESH AND SPENT FCC CATALYSTS

IntroductionEnvironmental issues and the security of energy supply, especially petroleum resources, have stimulated interest in the development of alternatives for fossil based energy carriers. Plant biomass is the only current sustainable source that could be converted into liquid fuels. Biomass fast pyrolysis can produce considerable liquid fuel named as bio-oil, and yield up to 75% was reported. However, the direct application of bio-oil is limited by the problems of high oxygen content, high viscosity, corrosion and its thermal instability. One of the most effective methods to improve the qualities of bio-oils is to reduce oxygen content in the presence of a catalyst. However, catalytic cracking reactions usually lead to high coking and remarkably decrease of oil fraction yield. The search for a suitable catalyst for the pyrolysis process and the upgrading of the oil is the aim of many research activities.
