GAS MIXTURE ENHANCED COALBED METHANE RECOVERY TECHNOLOGY: CONCEPT AND FEASIBILITY

IntroductionInjection of CO2 into deep unminable coal bed is currently under development for enhanced recovery of coalbed methane (ECBM) as well as permanent storage of CO2 (E. Syahrial., 2005). The authors have estimated that the technology has a CO2 storage capacity of 120.78 108 t in China (LIU Yanfeng et al., 2005). In the current concept of CO2-ECBM technology, pure CO2 is injected into unminable coalbed to store CO2 as more and longer as possible. However, pure CO2 as a displace gas has following problems. (1) making the coal swell and therefore reducing its permeability; (2) increasing the risk of gas outburst, if the coal is mined. In China, the coal usually has a low permeability and it is difficult to identify unminable coal at present. Besides, purifying CO2 from flue gas is very costly and technically immature. In a word, technologies applicable to the coal with low permeability and to be mined will be more suitable to China at present.
