A NOVEL PROCESS FOR CO2 SEQUESTRATION BY MINERAL CARBONATION COMBINED WITH ELECTROCHEMICAL METHOD

1. IntroductionThe international community has become increasingly concerned that greenhouse gas emissions have a potentially adverse effect on global climate conditions. Carbon dioxide is considered the most significant of the greenhouse gases, and reduction of CO2 emissions from the energy and process industries has become increasingly emphasized as a primary environmental concern Il-2l Reduction can be achieved by 1) efficiency improvements in fossil-fuel-fired power plants 1; 2) using low-carbon or carbon-free energy sources; 3) capturing and sequestering CO2 emissions 3 The latter strategy termed CO2 sequestration has gained increased attention recently 4 For CO2 sequestration, mineral carbonation is a novel and potential method. Mineral carbonation results in the storage of CO2 in solid form as a stable, environmentally benign mineral carbonate. In fact, the process emulates natural chemical transformations that occur spontaneously in nature-the weathering of rocks over geologic time scales I56. This method uses serpentine Mg3Si2O5(OH)4 and olivine Mg2SiO4 minerals which exist in very large quantities at the earths surface, and the general reaction is show in EQ. 17.
