A NOVEL INDIRECT CaSiO3 CARBONATION ROUTE FOR CO2 SEQUESTRATION

IntroductionIn natural, the weathering of silicate mineral is an important geochemical phenomenon, which has much relationship to CO2 cycle and global temperature by forming as geologically stable, environmentally benign carbonates. Due to growing concern about the increased concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere and possible adverse impacts, mineral carbonation has been studied as a possible option to mitigate CO2 However, the mineral carbonation rate is extremely slow, and thus accelerating the carbonation reaction rate and efficiency is the most crucial problem to develop a reasonable process. For this purpose, various mineral carbonation approaches have been suggested by Lackner1, OConnor2 and Kakizawa3. Based on these studies, it was theorized that solution pH plays a conflicting role in the two-stage reaction of process. Acidic solutions should favor mineral hydrolysis and improve silicate dissolution rates, while carbonate precipitation required alkaline solutions 2,4.
