Interactions of Coal with Supercritical CO2

IntroductionMore attention has been paid on the greenhouse gas effect of global warming worldwide. CO2 from industry and other human activity is one of major contributors. To prevent CO2 from entering the atmosphere, carbon capture and storage (CCS) is proposed. Injecting carbon dioxide into un-minable coalbed and enhance coalbed methane recovery (CO2-ECBM) is one of the promising technologies for reducing carbon dioxide emission.Coal can be described as a cross-linked macromolecular system with some small molecule compound as mobile phase. It is possible to have interaction with CO2 injected 1. Especially when CO2 is injected at depth below 0.8 km, it becomes a supercritical fluid. Supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2) occupies less space than gas, and have better diffusivity than either gas or ordinary liquid through the coalbed. It can be easilv diffused into the micro-pores of coal 2.
