KINETICS OF SOYBEAN OIL TRANSESTERIFICATION IN SUBCRITICAL METHANOL CATALYZED BY ZINC ACETATE
IntroductionTransesterification of vegetable oil with methanol (MeOH) has been a preferred method for producing biodiesel fuel. Generally speaking, there are two methods of transesterification reaction. One method is using catalyst and the other is without the help of catalyst. The former method mainly uses acid, alkali and enzyme catalysts1. The researchers have done a lot of work to study reaction kinetics of the two methods. Such as, Freedman et al. 2studied trans esterification kinetics of soybean oil (SBO); rate constants have been determined for each reaction with a computerized kinetic program. The effects of type of alcohol, 1-butanol, or MeOH; molar ration of alcohol to SBO and reaction temperature on rate constants and kinetics order were examined. Forward reactions appear to be pseudo-first order or second order depending upon conditions used. Reverse reactions appear to be second order. Luo Wen et al. 3 investigated kinetics of transesterification of triolein with MeOH catalyzed by immobilized Candida sp.99-125 lipase. A Bi-Bi reaction model, namely Ordered Bi-Bi mechanism, was proposed and was compared with traditional ping-pong Bi-Bi mechanism model equations. The analysis of kinetic datas shows that experimental initial reaction rate agreed very well with those predicted by ordered Bi-Bi mechanism model equations. Joelianingsih et al. 4 made a kinetic study on the non-catalytic transesterification of palm oil in a reactor without stirring at atmospheric pressure. The activation energy and the frequency factor values of the transesterification reaction obtained in this experiment were 31 kJ/mol and 4.2, respectively in this work.
