Responses of Common Buckwheat(Fagopyrum Esculentum)to Enhanced UV-B Radiation and Selenium
The impact of UV-B radiation and seleniam treatment on common buckwheat was studied in the outdoor experiments. The respiratory potential.plant height and biomass were measured in UV-B and selenium treated buckwheat plants.Plants were exposed to three levels of UV-B radiation;reduced level of UV-B radiation, ambient, and enhanced UV-B radiation, corresponding to a 17%reduction of stratospheric ozone layer.Selenium was applied as a foliar spray of sodium selenate at the time of blossoming.UV-B radiation induced the synthesis of UV absorbing compounds.Se treatment counteracted the stunting eflfect and lowering of biomass in UV-B treated common buckwheat plants.
