Heritability and Variation of Fertilization Rate in Common Buckwheat

Heritability and variation of fertilization rate in the two lines of common buckwheat varieties derived from Togakushi local landrace and Shinano NO.1 were studied to examine the feasibility of selection for the yield components. The fertilization rates of these lines were investigated in two large modules(flower clusters)per plant based on a module concept. The heritability calculated by the parent-offspring correlation in the fertilization rate, percentage of ripened grains and 100-grain weight on the average of the two lines were 0.58, 0.13 and 0.29, respectively.A low negative correlation was observed between the fertilization rate and the number of bloomed florets per module. In the parental populations, a wide variation among individuals was observed in fertilization rate. These observations indicate that the fertilization rate should be considered as all important trait for the development of a high yielding variety of common buckwheat. This fundamental information on fertilization rate will provide forfuture breeding research ofcommon buckwheat.
