EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF TRANSVERSELY ISOTROPIC ROCK PROPERTIES BY MICRO INDENTATION
This study deals with the determination of mechanical properties of elastic transversely isotropic rocks by an indentation test. We first recall, for isotropic materials, classical results (youngs modulus, C and ψ), based on Boussinesq theory applied to ideally circular rigid indenter. Then, we present our method for determining the elastic moduli of transversely isotropic rocks (e.g. schist). Based on solutions provided by Hanson (1992) and Vlassak and Nix (1993), the proposed approach consists in a combination of semi analytical solutions and a hypothesis on Poisson ratio. Experimental results obtained for a schist from the micro indentation tests are in very good agreement with the compression tests already performed in this material.
