TEMPERATURE EFFECTS ON MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF THE BEISHAN GRANITE

The Beishan area, a Gobi desert in Gansu province, is considered as a suitable candidate for HLW geological repository in China. In this study, a series of uniaxial compression and constant load tests have been conducted on deep intact granite of Beishan under different stress levels and temperatures. The results indicate that the peak stress, crack damage stress and elastic modulus decrease, while the Poissons ratio increases as the temperature increases. At the same constant load, the peak axial strain, peak lateral strain, minimum volumetric strain and time to failure decrease as the temperature increases. The time to failure increases rapidly as the constant load decreases. The major failure mode under uniaxial compression condition is axial splitting with shear zone and it is brittle. Increasing temperature beyond 90 ℃, cracks coalesce much more easily to form a shear zone.
