THERMO-HYDRO-MECHANICAL MODEL FOR UNSATURATED SWELLING POROUS MEDIUM-APPLICATION TO TASK A OF THE DECOVALEX-THMC PROJECT

The objective of Task A of the DECOVALEX-THMC project is to assess the implications of coupled THM processes in the near field of a typical repository on its long-term performance. The present paper illustrates the approach and preliminary results of the STUK team. The thermomechanical and mixture theoretical model incorporates the essentials of fully coupled THM behaviour of unsaturated swelling elastic medium in the limit of small deformations. The model describes the behaviour of the mixture via proper choices of free energy and dissipation function. A key feature is the mutual interactions, in particular, adsorption and moisture swelling. The model is applied to the simulation of container, MX-80 bentonite buffer, and the surrounding bedrock of a hypothetical repository involved in subtask A-1. The numerical calculations are performed with multiphysics finite element program ELMER.
