DUAL-CONTINUA MODEL FOR UNSATURATED FLOW AND APPLICATION TO DECOVALEX TASK D
Flow models for the heterogeneous unsaturated zone are reviewed and applied to DECOVALEX Task D. In structured porous media the water movement can be described by dual-porosity model, which is composed by coupled Richards equations of matrix and fracture continua, respectively, which are combined by additional transfer and specific storage terms. Studies of those terms are put forward in order to obtain accurate numerical solutions. After a group of contrastive computations and analyses, the specific storage term is critical in this model not only for its illegibility in the physical concept but also for its sensitive effects in the simulation. Further more estimation of the specific storage terms makes confusion in the practical application of dual-porosity model. Therefore it should be avoided and also can be avoided, in case of extreme situations, it should be carefully used. The dual continua model is applied in the framework of DECOVALEX Task D.
