STUDY OF COUPLED HYDRO-MECHANICAL-CHEMICAL (HMC)PROCESSES IN ROCKS

This paper presents recent progress in the study of the coupled hydro-mechanical-chemical (HMC) processes in rocks. The effect of pH values and ionic concentration of different chemical solutions such as CaCl2, NaCl, NaHCO3 and Na2SO4 on uniaxial/triaxial compressive strength, cracking velocity, and elastic wave velocity of samples of sandstone, granite and limestone rocks taken from construction sites in China were investigated. The results indicate that the strength reduction is about 20%-30% compared to dry samples. Another study investigated the effect of chemical reinforcement solutions to increase the ability to resist the weathering of rock, for more than 2000 years of the Longyou grottoes in Zhejiang province, China. Four special chemical reinforcement solutions were studied. One reasonable chemical reinforcement solution was determined through the field test on the site for more than a year. The results indicate that the chemical reinforcement has not changed the colour of the surrounding rock but has caused an increase in the elastic velocity by 10%-15%. Also, damage mechanics models and neural network models considering chemical effects have been developed for simulating the non-linear evolution of the tested rock under coupled MHC processes. The results show satisfactory agreement with the experiments.
