COUPLED HYDRO-MECHANICAL MODELING OF SEASONALLY AFFECTED UNSATURATED CLAYSTONE

In order to simulate coupled hydro-mechanical effects in seasonally affected unsaturated claystone, an elastic material model combined with an unsaturated single phase flow formulation, utilizing the Richards approximation, is applied in the finite element code RockFlow. The processes are coupled due to the incorporation of strains to the mass balance of the fluid as well as by Terzaghis effective stress law and the saturation dependent parameters in the non-linear material formulation. Swelling and shrinkage caused by the transient saturation field result in a change of anisotropic mechanical and hydraulic material properties. The performance of the approach is demonstrated by comparison with measured data, as conducted in Task C of DECOVALEX IV. The results given in this contribution focus on the prediction of the time dependent behavior of the expansive material caused by a seasonal change of humidity prescribed at the boundary of the domain.
