NEW MODEL FOR POST-CLOSURE SETTLEMENT OF MUNICIPAL WASTE LANDFILL BASED ON ENERGY DISSIPATING THEORY
Post-closure settlement of municipal waste landfill is a complex geoenvironmental subject because its time-dependent behaviour induced by chemical and physical reaction process. In the paper, model for the time-dependent settlement is studied. Half-value settlement time is defined as a new concept to point out the deficiencies of conventional settlement model. The energy controlling the post-closure settlement process of the landfill is divided into chemical energy and physical energy. Based on energy dissipating theory and experimental data, some postulates are given to deduce the differential control equation of the settlement process, and a new 3-parameter model for the time-dependent settlement is established. Mathematical proof shows that exponential model is a special expression of the new derived settlement model. Comparisons between the new landfill post-closure settlement model and field measuring data are conducted, and good agreement has been found.
