COUPLED CHEMICAL-MECHANICAL BEHAVIOUR: THE INFLUENCE OF SALINITY ON THE UNIAXIAL COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF THE SMALANDS GRANITE,SWEDEN

From experiments on brittle intact rock subjected to water with different salinity, the mechanical behaviour of granite has been investigated with emphasis on the uniaxial compressive strength. Several specimens of the Smaland granite collected from a depth of 450 m at the Asp? Hard Rock Laboratory, Sweden, were chosen. The effect of the salinity in several parts of the resulting stress-strain curves can be observed. For example, the inclination of the Class II post-peak failure locus is about 50% steeper for specimens subjected to highly saline water than for the other specimens in this study. This means that the specimens subjected to low saline water, distilled water and dry specimens display more distinct Class II post-peak behaviour than the specimens subjected to highly saline water. Moreover, we have also considered the time effect on the specimens subjected to distilled and low saline water. Despite a large variability of the results, the time effect can be seen as a decrease in both the compressive strength and the elastic modulus.
