COUPLED HEAT TRANSFER AND WATER FLOW ANALYSIS ON ICE RING FORMATION AROUND A UNDERGROUND LNG STORAGE CAVERN
A new concept storing LNG in a hard rock lined cavern have been developed and tested for several years. In order to prove technical feasibility of the developed concept, a pilot plant has been constructed and tested by storing LN2. In this paper, the results of hydro-thermal simulation related to ice ring formation, which is one of core techniques in the LNG pilot cavern, are presented. The position of ice ring estimated from the temperature distribution of rock mass near by cavern and variation of groundwater system after stopping of drainage were compared with monitored results. It is found from the results that the position of ice ring is quite similar to monitored position from temperature measurements. It is also revealed that the formation of ice ring is affected by latent heat and groundwater velocity after re-saturation.
