ASPO PILLAR STABILITY EXPERIMENT-TM BACK CALCULATION
The in-situ Aspo Pillar Stability Experiment has been undertaken at SKBs Aspo Hard Rock Laboratory in south eastern Sweden. The experiment used electrical heaters to induce stresses in a rock pillar until it partially failed. To determine the stresses acting on the pillar during heating, the monitored temperatures has been back calculated. The difficulty in accurately back calculate the temperature development close to the opening of an excavation in a rock mass with water bearing fractures is illustrated in this paper. The thermal conductivity and linear expansion coefficients determined in laboratory had to be adjusted to compensate for the anisotropy of the rocks thermal properties.
