A PRACTICAL COMPUTATION METHOD OF CONSOLIDATION FOR UNSATURATED SOILS
In this paper, a practical consolidation computation method for partially saturated soil is developed. Consolidation process consists of 2 stages. In the first stage, the soil compresses immediately. The water pressure, the air pressure, the skeleton stress, and the compression of soil are solved on basis of the effective stress principle, the compression equation of soil skeleton, the compression equation of air, and the soil water characteristics curve. In the latter consolidation stage, it is assumed that the water flow only depends on water pressure and is not influenced by the air. Then the independent continuity equation of water is set up to solve water pressure variation with time. The water and air are regarded as mixed fluid, and the continuity equation of mixed fluid is set up. The variation of pore fluid pressure with time is solved. Then, the suction, the air pressure, and soil compression can be calculated. For one dimensional problem, the difference method is used to solve these equations.
