EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF A SANDSTONE UNDER PORE PRESSURE
This experimental work aims at studying the influence of pore pressure on mechanical properties of a sandstone cored from site of the west route of south-to-north water transfer project in China. Through a series of triaxial tests with pore pressure of 5MPa and 10 MPa under confining pressure from 25 to 60 MPa, the strength and the deformation properties of sandstone have been studied. It is shown that the strength of the rock sample increases clearly with the increasing confining pressure at the same pore pressure, and decreases with the increasing pore pressure under the same confining pressure. It is also shown that the Youngs modulus of dry rock is affected slightly by the confining pressure. Nevertheless, it is suggested that under pore pressure, the Youngs modulus of rock samples increases with the increasing confining pressures, and decreases with the increasing pore pressures.
