HYDROGEOLOGICAL MODEL IN HORONOBE UNDERGROUND RESEARCH LABORATORY PROJECT
Japan Atomic Energy Agency has been conducting the Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory (URL) Project in Horonobe, northern part of Hokkaido, Japan, as a part of the research and development program on geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste. In the project, we have performed investigations and modeling studies on geology, hydrogeology, hydrogeochemistry and rock mechanics of the sedimentary rocks. According to the hydraulic tests in the deep boreholes and the laboratory tests using the core samples, it was shown that hydraulic conductivity has a strong depth dependency and the faults strongly affect the hydraulic properties. Using these results, a groundwater flow was carried out using an Equivalent Heterogeneous Continuum Model (EHCM) and the result was evaluated by comparison with the measured hydraulic pressure.
