ECOLOGICAL SANATION OF TES(Thermoelectric Plant of Sostanj-CONSTRUCTION OF HIGH DAM MADE FROM SLAG, ASH AND FUME DESULPHURIZATION PRODUCTS ON A SUBSIDING AREA
The article has cleared the way of a partial building up the high dam situated on a subsiding area being recognized as the unique in the world. Actually, the high dam has been made of waste products of the process of coal mining and producing electric power in Sostanj thermoelectric plant using this coal. In fact, the dam itself is a deposition place for waste materials and it is simultaneously playing the role of a barrier between Lake Velenje and Druzmirje Lake. The surface of deep coal mining in Velenje area has been subsiding drastically as the result of intensive deep coal mining. The subsiding areas do enlarge for about 2.5 to 3 millions of m3 annually of which some get floated by water creating the subsidence lakes like Velenje Lake, Dru(z)mirje Lake and (S)kale Lake. The subsiding lakes have been growing in their size as the result of constant process of subsiding, which may cause the lakes to flow into one another within ten (10) to fifteen (15) years. However, the pollution of all surface waters in (S)alek valley would follow as the consequence because unsuitable method of depositing waste products in the past made the water of Velenje Lake be extremely polluted. By the year 2020, when the exploitation works should be completed, about 17.2 million m3 of ash and waste products will have been inbuilt into the high dam reaching its end altitude of 110 m.
