Simulating Frost-heaving of Mass Concrete Structures with Numerical Method

In severe cold region, frost heaving of hydraulic structures is quite common. In monitoring process, displacement at dam top has “double peak in a year, which is considered as result of combined action of two factors. The first one is that volume increases with the rising while decreases with dropping of temperature. And the second one is frost heaving and thaw shrinking. Physical process being complicated, it is extremely hard to simulate frost heaving of mass concrete structures with numerical method. Temperature field taking the affect of phase change into account is calculated in this article and numerical simulation with FEM is carried out to compute deformation of a concrete gravity dam with frost heaving phenomenon. Results show that the calculated value is quite close to the observed value.
