The Technique of Splitting Grouting in Earth Dams and its Development
1 Introduction The technique of splitting grouting in earth dams initiated in China is a kind of new technique to remove hidden perils in dams. In the past years, the methods of building anti-seepage concrete wall, excavating and backing clay or making horizontal anti-seepage wall were used in treating the hidden perils in dams. They were in effect but with high cost and complex construction technique. There were still technical problems in them. Till to 1950s, the filling grouting method (also named dead-weight grouting method) appeared with long time limit for projects and no better effect. The filling grouting method was used in most of dams before 1980. During grouting, the splitting phenomena often appeared which was unconscious and was treated as accidents. There are essential differences between filling grouting and splitting grouting in dams no matter from grouting theories, grouting technics, technical points or grouting results.
