ITAIPU PROJECT-DAM SAFETY AND OPERATIONAL MANAGEMENT
At the Itaipu power plant in Brazil a monitoring and surveillance program of the dam was implanted since the construction stage and is now being upgraded and improved. A description of the instrumentation installed, the surveillance program and the management of the monitoring data is given. The upgrading of the monitoring system with the installation of the ADAS (Automatic Data Acquisition System) and the improvement of the activities related to the review and interpretation of the monitoring data is reported. Also, numerical indexes (Dam Comparison Number – DCN, SABESP Behavioral Index, and Index of Surveillance Level -ISL) were calculated in order to evaluate the risk associated with the dam and reservoir and the degree of surveillance carried out in order to check whether they remain within acceptable values.
