Preliminary Study of Decommissioning Assessment of Dam and River Restoration
Some hydraulic and hydropower engineering structures have serious defects and hidden faults or malfunction. The USA and other countries from Europe have introduced advanced theories and methods that can be used to solve these problems by assessing the physical conditions of the dam. A study on the evaluation of the retirement of dams was conducted by adapting the theories to Chinese conditions. A preliminary appraisal is done to characterize the physical conditions and the process for the retirement of dam and ecological restoration of the stream (on which the dam was built). In this paper, the theory, method and technology for the retirement of dams is discussed as well as the interrelation with other areas such as hydraulic structures, hydro-hydraulics, mathematics, technological economy, environmental engineering etc.
