RESISTIVITY MON ITORING FOR INTERNAL EROSION DETECTION AT H(A)LLBY AND S(A)DVA EMBANKMENT DAMS
Long term resistivity monitoring has been used for seepage measurements and defect location in several dams in Sweden. The fundamentals are based on the seasonal variation of temperature and total dissolved solids, which cause a seepage dependent seasonal resistivity variation in the dam. This variation can be measured using high resolution monitoring systems that has been developed by Lund University. Measurements based on this methodology started in 1994, and the first permanent installation was made in 1996. Daily data are available until 2005, except for a few shorter breaks. These data are unique, and clearly show the seasonal variation. Experience from long term monitoring in two Swedish embankment dams have shown that seepage anomalies can be detected. The seepage rates may under favourable circumstances be quantified. Signs of internal erosion process have also been be detected.
