Ezperience and Lessons from Drainage and Filtration Practices of Concrete-faced Rockfill Dam
In this paper 3 Concrete-faced Rockfill Dam (CFRD), Gouhou Dam, Zhushuqiao Dam and Chengping Dam in China are taken to discuss the importance of drainage and filtration. As no drainage is arranged for Gouhou CFRD, when water enters into joints, it cannot discharge in time, resulting in dam failure. With regard to Zhushuqiao CFRD, the transitional layer cannot effectively protect the cushion layer, and materials for the cushion layer are gradually eroded owing to water leakage of peripheral joints, resulting in a dangerous condition, that is, rupture and collapse of the face slabs, with the seepage being over 2.5 m3/s. The observed data of Chengping Dam has proved that large dam deformation has occurred, owing to its smooth drainage and effective protection of the cushion layer by the transitional layer, it is still in a normal operation situation. Lessons and experience show that available drainage and filtration of CFRD are vital to dam safety.
