Analysis of the Frost Movement of the Fengman Concrete Gravity Dam

In this paper the frost movement of concrete was defined after carefully examining the mechanism of frost action of concrete and typical deformation process of concrete specimens. Then the phenomenon of “two peaks in one year in the vertical and horizontal displacement at crest of Fengman concrete gravity dam was probed into accordingly. And by finite element analysis of the equivalent thermal deformation simulating the effect of freezing-thawing action, it was shown that the dam crest moves horizontally as well as vertically resulting from frost action. Furthermore, the observed displacements at crest of Fengman dam were analyzed using statistic models including factors representing the effect of frost action. The results indicated that frost movement, in the form of seasonal movement and growing tendency in the time component, still took place even after the rehabilitation of Fengman dam was completed and the phenomenon of “two peaks in one year became less evident.
