OBSERVED AND CALCULATED EARTHQUAKE-INDUCED SETTLEMENTS OF ROCKFILL DAMS
A technique for evaluating the seismic safety of dams should be established by concretely defining the Level 2 earthquake motion for each dam site. The seismic performance of embankment dams may be verified by confirming that there is no overtopping of the reservoir water due to any crest settlement induced by Level 2 earthquake motion. In the light of the above, we have been conducting a fundamental study to establish a method of verifying seismic performance for embankment dams. Firstly, data was gathered from observations of the settlement of earth core rockfill dams due to large-scale earthquakes, and then, the relationship between the maximum acceleration of earthquake motion and the observed settlement was analyzed. Secondly, the sliding deformation of various embankment dam models was evaluated by combining dynamic analysis and the Newmark method, at earthquake motions of various strengths. Based on these results, the seismic safety of a rockfill dam with an impervious core against Level 2 earthquake motion is discussed.
