Slope reinforcement and stability monitoring after tunnel collapse in the right abutment of Changma Reservoir

The spillway tunnel of Changma reservoir in Gansu Province was seriously collapsed during the dam construction period, which triggered the displacement of the rock slope and jeopardized the slope stability in the right bank. This paper introduces the reinforcement measures based on field investigation, laboratory tests and numerical analyses. Consolidation grouting method was recommended to strength the slope toe after study on the slope stability and finally implemented to prevent the further deformation of the right bank slope. The field monitoring program and results are also presented in this paper. The stability analysis with distinct element method and the field monitoring data showed that the slope is safe and stable after the reinforcement.
