INTRODUCTION TO A NEW SURFACE-WAVE BASED NDT METHOD FOR CRACK DETECTION AND ITS APPLICATION IN LARGE DAM MONITORING
Cracking in the body of a large dam has profound impact on the dam’s safety. Whileinformation of cracking depth is known to be of great importance, existing non-destructive test (NDT)methods such as super-sonic technique are usually ineffective in detection of cracks with large depths. This paper introduces an impact elastic-wave based NDT method suitable for detection of such deepcracks. This method not only analyzes the elastic wave propagation times, but more importantlyexploits the attenuation characteristics of Raleigh wave component. A large number of validatingexperiments and comparison studies have shown that this new method, when combined with a uniqueerror processing technique, significantly improves the detection range and measurement precisionover traditional methods. Finally, this paper presents results obtained in a multi-year field monitoringprogram on several large dams in Japan using this new method.
