Proposal of dynamic protection/restoration schemes for QoS support in Labeled Optical Burst Switching networks

Optical Burst Switching network architecture was proposed in literature to take advantage of the vast bandwidth of optical fiber and to avoid the use of optical buffer which is still immature nowadays. However, the buffer-less nature of OBS network has resulted in random burst loss even at low traffic loads, which has put a threat on the deployment of OBS network. To solve this problem, some proactive and reactive approaches have been proposed so far, such as the Burst Clone (BC) as a proactive scheme and Burst Retransmission (BR) as a reactive scheme to reduce contention based data loss. However, these methods can play a role in not only the contention resolutions but also the protection/restoration schemes, if considering link failures which are common scenarios in optical networks. This paper has proposed a dynamic protection and restoration scheme by introducing Burst Clone in to the 1+1 protection scheme and Burst Retransmission into the restoration scheme in the Labeled Optical Burst Switching network (LOBS). These two schemes which inherit different level of resilience can be dynamically chosen by the ingress node according to the QoS requirements of the traffic. Corresponding demonstrations results using a LOBS network testbed were also presented. Experimental study has verified that the proposed schemes suited well in the LOBS network.
