Efficient Iterative Closest Point Algorithm for Measured Surface Registration
Noise and vibration engineering, Reverse engineering, Image registration, Iterative closest point Reverse engineering technology helps to efficiently obtain CAD model from a physical structure, that can be used for structural dynamics or finite element model for noise and vibration engineering analysis like modal analysis. An elaborate measure procedure to extract geometrical information from amount of measured image in reverse engineering is important to speed up measurement efficiency. A single range image can’t get the whole object due to hidden surface during once measurement, and a number of range images taken from different views have to be merged to construct an entire 3D model. Image registration is critical to align two image measured in sequence. Iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm is a widely used for image registration. The traditional ICP starts with two meshes and an initial guess for their relative rigid-body transform, and iteratively refines the transform by repeatedly generating pairs of corresponding points on the meshes and minimizing an error metric.In this paper, feature extraction based surface reconstruction technology from a sequence range images measured is investigated. Firstly, feature points are identified based on average curvature estimation around neighbor of a point. Then, feature line linking is performed based on edge spanning pattern by using the defined penalty function to each kind feature point. The superfluous feature points around the linked feature line can be eliminated outliers to get a more clear feature link. Secondly, pairwise registration is carried out based on the extracted plane and linked line to match two measured neighboring images. Thirdly, measure procedure is managed according to the identified feature to speed up the further ICP efficiency.
