Economic Batch Quantity with Random Defectives and Rework
In this paper we consider the problem of obtaining the economic batch quantity for an imperfect production system in which defective items are produced in each cycle of production. We assume that the percent of defective items produced within each normal production run is a random variable. We also assume the defectives produced will be reworked immediately after each production run is completed. For this system, we first derive the expected total cost function, the sum of inventory holding cost, setup cost, normal production process cost, and rework process cost per unit time. Then we obtain the economic batch quantity which minimizes the expected total cost. The resulting formula shows that to obtain the value of the optimal batch quantity we do not need the distribution function of the random variable β , only a knowledge about the mean and the variance of this random variable is sufficient
