The Impact of Supply Chain Management Practices and Supply Chain Relationship Quality on Competitive Advantage

The competitive environment has changed the relationships between manufacturing firms and their suppliers into a partnership that calls for full integration in order to compete in the fast changing environment. Effective supply chain management (SCM) practices and the relationship among the members should have an impact on competitive advantage. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to explore the impact of SCM practices and SC relationship quality on competitive advantage with an integrated framework. The research subjects are the top 1000 manufacturing firms in Taiwan and the empirical data are tested by using structural equation model. The results suggest that SCM practices and SC relationship quality both have a positive impact on competitive advantage. Besides, the results also suggest that the practices for SCM ranked in terms of factor loading are: (1) information sharing; (2) problem solving and improvement; (3) objective setting and new product development; (4) the establishment of information system; (5) supplier selection. The practices for enhancing SC relationship quality ranked in terms of factor loading are: (1) trust; (2) communication and information sharing; (3) adaptation; (4) cooperation; (5) commitment; (6) interdependence.
