Drivers Towards Agility in the Finnish Metal Industry
The emerging business paradigm agility, namely, the ability to rapidly respond to changes in market and customer demand, addresses new ways of running companies to meet the challenges of today’s changing business environment, and deploys a market driven innovative capability, which will be the main source of competitive advantage in the future. The need for agility has traditionally been associated with the supply chains of high technology industries. However, traditional industries also face similar challenges in terms of speed, flexibility, increased product diversity and customization. The object of this study is to determine the drivers that generate the pressure for implementing agility in the supply chains of the Finnish metal industry. This study analyzes the driving forces towards agility in two case networks. Both networks have their origin in traditional metal industry, but the changes in the business environment have led them to develop their ability for agility in different ways. Today these networks represent two relatively different parts of the metal industry. This paper concludes that the drivers towards agility are clearly seen in the business environment of the metal industry and have to seriously be taken into account in the strategic decisions of supply chain performance.
