Critical Factors in Healthcare Process Modelling: a Multiple Case Study
Determining the critical factors driving the success (or failure) of healthcare process modelling projects is of great interest in order to use process modelling for redesigning and improving healthcare services. In this paper, we first analyse the healthcare process modelling literature in order to investigate how critical factors of business process modelling are affected by the specific characteristics of the healthcare context. We find that these characteristics greatly affect three critical factors, i.e. complexity, information resource availability, and the structure of the modelling team. Then, we present a multiple case study in order to show how the relevance of these critical factors is affected by the goal of the modelling process. The conclusions can serve to asses the relative importance of the critical factors for a given healthcare modelling project and to foresee the difficulties that may arise during its development, as well as to carry out contingency plans against these.
