Operating Room Planning with Elective and Emergency Patients
We consider the problem of elective surgery planning when a random portion of operating rooms (ORs) capacity is used by emergency surgery. The planning problem consists in assigning elective patients to ORs over a planning horizon to minimize patients’ related costs and expected ORs’ overtime costs. The planning problem is first formulated as a stochastic mathematical program. Then, we derive a column re-formulation of the problem and propose a column generation approach to solve it. Computation experiments show that the solution approach results in near-optimal solutions and problems of practical sizes can be solved in a short computation time.
