A Fast and Flexible Tool to Design Order Picking Systems
Pick-and-pass order picking systems have many applications in warehouses. This paper provides a fast approximation method to analyze the system performance by means of queueing network theory. The objective of this method is to provide an instrument for obtaining rapid performance estimates such as order lead time and station utilization of the order picking system. This approximation method can be used to evaluate the effects of the storage methods in picking stations, the number of order pickers in picking stations, the size of picking stations, the arrival process of customer orders, and the impact of batching and splitting orders on system performance. The approximation method is especially essential for the system design phase since as it is fast, flexible, and sufficiently accurate.
