Evolution of Priority Rules for Simple Assembly Line Balancing Problems

This paper discusses the development of an evolutionary framework for the solution of assembly line balancing problems. The proposed framework utilizes a genetic programming machine for the evolution of task priority rules based on task and problem characteristics. These rules subsequently generate assembly line balances with the help of a station-oriented construction scheme. The evolutionary process handles the optimization of the rules and the corresponding line balances. The framework is tested on a large experimental set of Type-I assembly line balancing problems and its performance is compared against typical man-made priority rules that utilize the same station-oriented construction scheme.
