Deciding Buffer Size in a Complex Production System Using a GA - Production Simulation Based Method
Deciding buffer size for production lines has been gained more and more importance because of growing production lines’ complexity and production costs. The decision regarding buffer size is one of the most important factors in maximizing production efficiency and minimizing production cost. This paper presents a GA-production simulation based method to find the optimal or near optimal buffer size for a complex production system (CPS). For the performance evaluation, a decomposition approach is used as an evaluative method in conjunction with genetic algorithms (GA). In order to achieve the most efficient use of GA, a multiple vectors distribution method (MVDM) is used for the genes arrangement in individuals. An application example was developed and after a number of operations based on GA-simulation, the sizes of all buffers for the CPS could be found.
