Control policy optimization of continuous-flow transfer Lines with delay

This paper addresses the control policy optimization of failure-prone continuous transfer lines with delays and constant demand. Machines are subject to time-dependent failures, times to failure and times to repair are random variable with general distribution. Material flowing out a machine waits a period of time called delay for material transfer before arriving at its downstream buffer. The production at each stage is controlled by a base-stock policy. We present a simulation-based optimization method for determining optimal base-stock levels in order to minimize the long run average cost for inventory holding and demand backlogging. The optimization algorithm is based on the Infinitesimal Perturbation Analysis for estimation of gradlients along the simulation. Numerical experimentation is performed to investigate the relationship between the optimal control policy and different system parameters.
