A New Approach for Web-GIS Based Collaborative Transportation Planning System Design
Web-based GIS provides interactive mapping andspatial analysis capabilities for enhancing publicparticipation and collaboration in decision-makingprocesses. This paper proposed a system design for aWeb-GIS based collaborative transportation planningsystem. The system aims to offer a new efficient meansfor transportation planning and to enable differentdepartments and public to participate the activities ofurban transportation planning, such as geo-referencedinformation collection, so that transportationdepartment planners and public could work together tofulfill the planning work. The system has adopted threelayers system infrastructure of J2EE. The databaseincluded the geography data, transportation planningprojects data and CSCW data. The system adopts javaGIS applet to communicate with database and EJB. Thegeographical interface is shown with a java GIS appletin the webpage. The system infrastructure design hasbeen experimented in a prototype system. It can beapplied to the transportation-planning field fortransportation information broadcasting, datamanagement, statistical analysis, and collaborativedecision-making.
