Three-Dimensional Online Customization Ordering System
With the increasingly intensive market competitionand the demand for individualized products fromcustomers, a new pattern for manufacturing, masscustomization, is therefore emerging. In this paper wepropose an architecture to construct a three-dimensional e-commerce website which supports masscustomization. Online product information isrepresented as VRML models, which are based onrelated CAD data and come up through conversionprocess. With the enhanced interaction functions,customers can customize the products as they like andview the results in real time through a web browser.The system takes 3 tier architecture and adopts RMI tocommunicate between client and server. We have alsodeveloped supporting tools, which are incorporatedwith PDM system, to facilitate enterprises to publishtheir product catalogues. These tools define thecustomizable product information in XML documentsand can automatically generate all the resources toconstruct such a 3D website based on predefinedtemplate. We have built a prototype of online ordersystem for beach vehicle.The results make us believethat the proposed system has potential to be practical,which may need some improvement.
