Improving Design with Collaborative Planning, Forecasting and Replenishment through Knowledge Management and CSCW
Customization is a critical success factor in the currentbusiness environment. Companies need to improvesupply chain management for the design andmanufacturing quality of their products to becompatible with the individuals needs most rapidly andat lowest cost possible. One of the most importantcomponents that foster fast and inexpensivecustomization is the integration among partners in thesupply chain. In the context, collaboration in the supplychain is the first step for improved data exchange, strategic use of information and homogenization ofsystems used for effective communication. As part of theintegration mechanism, the Collaborative Planning,Forecasting and Replenishment (CPFR) Model is avaluable technological innovation tool to strategically, tactically, and operationally support theimplementation of several types of transactions amongthe partners. This paper bears two objectives:presenting the CPFR Model as a technologicalinnovation, describing interaction issues betweenstrategic partners during that process and showing howKnowledge Management and CSCW applied to theCPFR Model can provide support to supply chainmanagement, so that the partners in this chain canincrease their customization capability and improve thedesign process.
